Tasting Notes: A white wine grape, also known as Grauburgunder in Germany or Pinot Grigio in Italy. Pinot Gris from Alsace tends to be richer and more full-bodied compared to its Italian counterparts, often showing more complex and deeper flavors. The nose is complex and rich, featuring ripe stone fruits like apricot and peach, alongside notes of honey, quince, and subtle spices. There are also hints of floral and mineral undertones typical of the Kessler terroir. It’s full-bodied and luscious, it is known for its rich, velvety texture. The flavors are well-integrated, offering a harmonious blend of ripe fruit, honey, and a touch of smokiness. Despite its richness, the wine maintains a good balance with refreshing acidity. Long and persistent, with a pleasing aftertaste of spiced fruit and a hint of minerality.

The Estate: Domaine Schlumberger was established in 1810 by Nicolas Schlumberger in the town of Guebwiller, Alsace. The winery has been family-owned for over two centuries and is now managed by the 6th and 7th generations of the Schlumberger family. They expanded their vineyard holdings significantly over the years, developing a reputation for excellence in viticulture and winemaking. The estate is recognized not only for its wines but also for its commitment to preserving the heritage and traditions of the Alsace wine region. They are the largest privately-owned vineyard in Alsace, covering approximately 130 hectares (about 320 acres). The estate is noted for its exceptional terroir diversity. It includes steep terraced vineyards on the slopes of the Vosges Mountains, which offer varying microclimates and soil compositions ideal for different grape varieties. They are particularly known for their Grand Cru vineyards, with around 70 hectares classified under this prestigious designation. Notable Grand Crus include Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel. They practice sustainable and biodynamic viticulture, reduced of use of chemicals, implemented cover cropping, and adopted organic practices to maintain soil health and biodiversity. The estate holds certifications for its sustainable practices, reflecting its commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Kessler vineyard is located in a natural amphitheater at the southern end of the Grand Cru vineyards of Guebwiller, with a unique terroir. Sandy clay soils over sandstone bedrock. Southeast exposure, providing excellent sunlight and drainage. The vineyard benefits from a microclimate that is both warm and dry, ideal for ripening Pinot Gris grapes. The grapes were hand-harvested, ensuring only the best quality fruit was used. Fermentation and aging occurred in stainless steel tanks or traditional large Alsatian foudres (wooden barrels), preserving the wine's freshness and character.

Suggested food and wine pairing: This wine pairs well with rich and flavorful dishes such as foie gras, roasted poultry, creamy sauces, and even spicy Asian cuisine. Complements well with aged cheeses (Comté and Gruyère) or those with strong flavors like Munster or soft blue cheese. Goes really well with not overly sweet desserts (pear tarts, almond-based pastries).
